Yogathon 2006!

Yogathon

I volunteered at, and then participated in the Yogathon on Saturday at the Plaza of nations. In the past it has consisted of 108 sun salutations (108 being a sacred number in the hindu texts). This year it was 108 minutes of yoga and much less strenuous. There were about 10 different instructors up on stage who led us through a short routine, each in a different style of yoga.

We were welcomed first by a First Nations band whose ancestors lived on the shores of False Creek. They did a short song and dance and then things got going. Made me feel a bit guilty when they talked about the abundant fish and seals and sea lions that used to live off the shore and what a thriving community it was. Now it's condos and pavement. Oh well. At least now we can try to preserve what we have and at the same time share what a beautiful city we live in with the rest of the world.

It's a really neat event; a charity function to raise money to send kids affected by HIV/AIDS to summer camp. Thanks to everyone who pledged me! This year there were a lot of vendors around too, a whole health and wellness themed festival.

Again, just like Friday night, there was a lot of good energy!
